The Eel River has been protected under wildlife laws
since 1906. It is now a part of Mendocino National Forest and recognized
by the U.S. government as a Wild
and Scenic River. Recently it has been discovered that the health
of the river and its watershed have been compromised. Now it is time to
act, to restore the wildlife that has been harmed. Below are some groups
dedicated to the protection and restoration of our river.

The Upper Eel Watershed Forum is a non-profit organization with a board of directors, steering groups, and issue working groups formed to protect and restore the watershed. Friends
Of the Eel River is a group formed with the initial objective to decommission
the Scott and Van Arsdale dams and get back the natural waters of our
area. They are headquartered in Garberville and print seasonal reports
known as The Eel River Reporter.

MERG stands for Mainstem Eel River Group which is based
in the Humbolt/ Alder Point region of the state. One objective of the
group is to educate themselves and their neighbors in issues regarding
health of the river and watershed. They meet monthly and have been since
1997.

The
Natural Community Conservation Planning program is a new way the government
is dealing with endangered species. It is a program focused on cooperative
partnerships working for the long-term stability of complete ecological
systems.

The
Bureau of Land Management is responsible for National lands. It is
currently working on a Clean Water Initiative to help restore and keep
our nation's water pure.

U.S.Fish
and Wildlife is concerned with all conservation issues. They have
a web-site providing the public with up to date information on all their
endeavors.
