SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADE ART

Beginning Art Survey (18 weeks to One Year Course)

 

I. ARTISTIC PERCEPTION

Students will interpret sensory information into the elements and principles of visual arts. They will demonstrate ability to analyze, interpret, and describe elements and principles of art:

II. CREATIVE EXPRESSION

Students will cxperience a wide variety of art materials and forms. They will develop visual arts knowledge and skills to express ideas imaginatively.

III. HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXT

Students will learn about the role that the visual arts have played in the development of cultures throughout the world. Through looking, listening, talking, and writing, they will:

1.       Learn about the roles and contributions that artists and other people with specialized arts interests have made through the ages

2.       Learn that the style developed by individual artists is representative of historical periods to be studied; i.e., medieval through early modern European times (7th grade), and United States History, Colonial through Rise of Industrial America (8th grade)

3.       become acquainted with the lives and works of these artists or others who demonstrate the above themes

IV. AESTHETIC VALUING

Students will broaden and enhance their aesthetic responses to the environment. They will develop greater skills to analyze, interpret, and describe their own work and the work of others. Discussions could begin with:

1.       (Knowledge) What are the elements of art in this artwork?

2.       (Comprehension) Describe the subject matter.

3.       (Application) What types of lines, color, etc., would you use to reproduce this object/painting?

4.       (Analysis) Identify the center of interest and give reason for your choice.

5.       (Synthesis) What might this artwork say if it could talk?

6.       (Evaluation) If you created this artwork, how much would you sell it for?

 

V. CONNECTlONS, RELATlONS, APPLICATIONS

Understanding relationships between the arts and with disciplines outside the arts.

The students can connect, relate, and apply various types of arts knowledge and skills within the art form, across the arts discipline (dance, music, theater and visual arts) and with disciplines outside of the arts.
