Round Valley Arts Curriculum


INTERMEDIATE CHOIR (GRADES 7-12)

 

I. ARTISTIC PERCEPTION

1.      Students sing a lot of songs, enjoy singing and the group experience, and expand and refine skills introduced in Beginning Choir. They sing two-part music and are introduced to three-part music.

2.      Expand theory skills.

·        Rhythm-review/introduce; whole, half, quarter, eighth, sixteenth notes and rests.

·        Intervals

·        Scales-major (moveable do)

·        Meter-compound and simple

·        Note reading-bass clef, ledger lines

·        Music terminology found in music sung

3.      Introduce voice classifications, with some emphasis placed on the changing voices.

 

II. CREATIVE EXPRESSION

1.      Singing

·        Begin sight-reading; continue to use imitation and example as means for learning songs.

·        Strengthen vocal production techniques, especially open jaw.

·        Expand diction; focus on vowels.

2.      Performing (approximately two to three public performances per year)

 

III. HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXT

1.      Sing a variety of styles of music, including exposure to other languages.

 

IV. AESTHETIC VALUING

1.      Students explain musical preferences verbally.

2.      Listen to other choirs.

3.      Begin listening critically to own tone and that of the choir to create blend, intonation, and balance.


V. CONNECTIONS, RELATIONS, APPLICATIONS

Students understand relationships between the arts and with disciplines outside of the arts by:

1.      having access to practice and composition computer hardware with appropriate supporting software and instructions,

2.      being introduced to the physics and mathematics inherent in the production of musical tones,

3.      creating melody and words that will enhance studies of history and literature,

4.      experiencing music through the use of technology, including CDROM, video, CD, etc.
