Round Valley Arts Curriculum


CONCERT BAND (GRADES 7-12)

 

I. ARTISTIC PERCEPTION

1.      This is a performance oriented course.

·        Refinement of Grade 2 and introduction and expansion of Grade 2 1/2-3 1/2 band literature.

2.      Expand theory skills

·        Rhythm: refine previously learned rhythms and introduce quarter note triplets

·        Intervals as related to chords and harmony

·        Major scales: A flat, D flat, D, A Concert Scale, and Chromatic Scale for the tessitura of the instrument

·        Minor Mode: introduce

·        Music terminology: anything on their music

·        Key changes: auditory perception and mechanics


II. CREATIVE EXPRESSION

1.      Playing

·        Expansion of proper tone production and playing techniques

a)      Refinement of embouchure formation

b)      Continued practice of proper breathing technique

c)      Expand articulations (i.e., staccato, legato, marcato, accent)

d)      Expansion of proper intonation techniques

·        Introduction of musicality

a)      Phrasing

b)      Expressive playing

c)      Form and analysis

2.      Performing

·        Public performances should be sought out.

·        It is preferable to have the group critiqued by outside professionals (i.e., festivals, clinicians, etc.).

·        Opportunities to play under other directors should be available to students (i.e., honor groups, combined bands).

·        Opportunities to play solos or in small ensembles should be available to students (i.e., solo and ensemble festivals.)


III. HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXT

1.      Students play a wide variety of music, paying attention to different styles, cultures, and eras.

2.      Students perform for public and community functions.


IV. AESTHETIC VALUING

1.      Students refine their ability to explain musical experiences, verbally and in writing.

2.      Students listen to other bands, especially live performances.

3.      Students refine critical listening skills and adapt their own playing to achieve proper blend, balance, and intonation within the ensemble sound.


V. CONNECTIONS, RELATIONS, APPLICATIONS

Students understand relationships between the arts and with disciplines outside of the arts by:

1.      having access to practice and composition computer hardware with appropriate supporting software and instructions,

2.      being introduced to the physics and mathematics inherent in the production of musical tones,

3.      creating melody and words that Will enhance studies of history and literature,

4.      experiencing music through the use of technology, including CDROM, video, CD, etc.
