Round Valley Arts Curriculum

BEGINNING CHOIR (GRADES 4-12)

 

I. AESTHETIC PERCEPTION


1.      The emphasis is on singing a lot of songs, having fun, and enjoying the group experience.

·        Unison singing

·        Introduction to two-part songs

2.      Introduction to theory

·        Rhythmic symbols; whole, half, quarter, eighth notes and rests.

·        Dynamics piano through forte.

·        Note reading names in treble clef

·        Music terminology found in music sung


II. CREATIVE EXPRESSION


1.      Singing

·        Moving from imitation and example to reading as means for learning songs.

·        Introduction to proper vocal production

a)      deep breathing (support and posture)

b)      open jaw

c)      diction (especially consonants)


III. HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXT


1. Students sing a variety of styles of music.


IV. AESTHETIC VALUING


1.      Students express musical preferences verbally.

2.      Students listen to other choirs (live or recorded).


V. CONNECTIONS, RELATIONS, APPLICATIONS


Students understand relationships between the arts and with disciplines outside of the arts by:

1.      having access to practice and composition computer hardware with appropriate supporting software and instructions,

2.      being introduced to the physics and mathematics inherent in the production of musical tones,

3.      creating melody and words that will enhance studies of history and literature,

4.      experiencing music through the use of technology, including CDROM, video, CD, etc.
