This is a mockup of a totem portal Jack was commissioned to build for a private museum. In the center is Wakan Tanka, roughly translated as "the Great Spirit." Flanking Wakan Tanka are six Great Chiefs. On the left from top to bottom are, Quanah Parker, Tashunka Witco ("Crazy Horse"), and Seattle. The right, from top to bottom are, Cochise, Tatanka Iyotake ( "Sitting Buffalo," often mistermed "Sitting Bull"), and Heinmot Tooyalaket ("Chief Joseph"). Jack says about this project, "I could not in all conscience create one ( i.e. a totem) that said nothing, nor copy one that did, leaving only one alternative: to carve a set of totems depicting and honoring the men and women who had the heritage and blood ties to the language of the totem." |
