Phyllis Azbill Demonstrates Basketmaking

Pine Needles ready for Weaving

To prepare pine needles for weaving: boil for 45 minutes to l hour. This will clean and soften them. Let sit overnight (or you can use them sooner, if necessary) Keep damp, by covering with damp paper towel. Now the pine needles are pliable.

Shaping the Pine Needles
Take about 7 damp pine needles (if they are dry, they will break), and wrap around pencil to give pine needles a "memory" so the needles will want to go around as you weave the basket.

Phyllis with Bone Awl
Phyllis is holding an old bone awl that was found in the hills near Covelo. It is very finely carved and probably a hundred or more years old. It is an original basket tool that Phyllis’ ancestors would have used in basketweaving.
